WHAT’S NEXT FOR TRANSPORT IN BARNSLEY, DONCASTER, ROTHERHAM AND SHEFFIELD? HAVE YOUR SAY AND HELP SHAPE THE SOUTH YORKSHIRE PEOPLE’S NETWORK

People across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield are being invited to share their views on the future of transport as South Yorkshire continues to build its long-term vision for a better-connected region.
A short survey launched on Thursday 1 October, giving residents the opportunity to help shape the South Yorkshire People’s Network in the years ahead.
Answers from the survey will help inform the Local Transport Plan, which will set out priorities for improving transport and supporting communities, businesses and economic growth across the region. It will also play a key role in shaping the future development of the People's Network vision, creating a transport system that is affordable, safe, reliable and easy to use.
Residents are being asked about their experiences of travelling around South Yorkshire, including what works well, what could be improved and which transport priorities matter most to them. Topics include affordability, reliability, accessibility, safety, walking, wheeling, cycling, public transport and connections to jobs, education, healthcare and leisure opportunities.
The survey is open to everyone, whether they travel regularly by bus, tram, train, car, bike, wheelchair or on foot, or do not travel very often.
The engagement marks the first stage of a wider conversation with communities across South Yorkshire. Feedback gathered through the survey will be used to develop proposals for the draft Local Transport Plan, which will be subject to formal public consultation in 2027. Following consultation, feedback will be considered before the final Plan is published in autumn 2027.
Tom Finnegan-Smith, Director of Transport - Strategy & Policy at SYMCA, said:
"We're building a transport network designed around the people who use it, and that means listening to the people of South Yorkshire every step of the way.
"Whether you travel by bus, tram, train, bike, on foot, by wheelchair or by car, your experiences matter. This survey is an opportunity to tell us what's working, what's not, and what would make the biggest difference to how you get around.
"The feedback we receive will help shape our new Local Transport Plan and guide the next phase of the South Yorkshire People's Network, ensuring it reflects the needs and priorities of communities across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield."
The survey is available online and paper copies can also be collected from transport interchanges, with prepaid return envelopes provided.
The survey closes on 31 October 2026.
Residents who need the survey in a different format, or require support to take part, can call Traveline on 0800 952 0002 or email communications@southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk.
