Books spark imagination, build confidence and help shape futures.
That's why South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard, is bringing together partners from across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield to create the South Yorkshire Reading Network.
The ambition is simple: to make reading for pleasure a bigger part of everyday life for children and families across South Yorkshire.
By creating memorable, joyful moments around books, language, creativity and storytelling, the Reading Network will help more children discover the magic of stories and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Why reading matters
Reading is about far more than learning words on a page.
Stories help children explore new worlds, develop confidence, build communication skills and unlock their creativity. Shared reading can strengthen family bonds, create lasting memories and help children feel ready to learn and thrive.
We want every child in South Yorkshire to know that reading are for them.

The South Yorkshire Reading Network builds on the fantastic work already taking place across our communities.
Across every corner of South Yorkshire, there is already a strong foundation of activity helping children engage with books and storytelling.
The Reading Network brings these partners together around a shared goal: creating more opportunities for children and families to experience reading in ways that are fun, welcoming and inspiring.
Working together, we can reach more families, share good practice and ensure that every child has access to the benefits reading can bring.

The Mayor's Little Big Book Club
At the heart of the South Yorkshire Reading Network is The Mayor's Little Big Book Club.

The Mayor officially launched the Little Big Book Club as part of a South Yorkshire-wide celebration of stories and reading, marking the beginning of a long-term commitment to building a culture of reading for pleasure across South Yorkshire.
The launch included the South Yorkshire Festival of Reading, with storytelling, creative activities and the distribution of thousands of free books and story sacks for children and families across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
The Little Big Book Club is designed to help children discover the joy of reading through shared experiences and create opportunities for families to spend time together immersed in stories
The programme will connect families with local libraries and community organisations across the region, making it easier to find reading support and opportunities close to home.

Over the coming years, families, schools, libraries, community organisations and partners across the region will play a vital role in helping more children discover the joy of reading.
