DEPUTY MAYOR RESPONDS TO WEST STREET SHOOTING

Responding to the shooting incident in West Street, Sheffield and South Yorkshire Police launching a murder investigation, South Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, said:
“I am deeply saddened by the death of a woman following the incident on West Street, and my heartfelt thoughts are with her family, friends and everyone affected by this tragic loss.
"While we have seen a significant decline in gun crime, this horrific incident demonstrates the horrors, no matter how rare. It is important that members of the community come forward with information to prevent innocent members of the public becoming victims of senseless violence of this nature.
“People should be reassured that South Yorkshire Police are working at pace to establish the full circumstances and to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“Just days ago, I was out on patrol with officers working in the night-time economy, including on and around West Street. I saw first-hand the dedication, professionalism and visible presence they bring to keeping people safe. There was nothing during that patrol to indicate something like this would happen just two days later, which perhaps underlines the shocking nature of this incident.
“South Yorkshire Police have arrested three people connected to this incident, and I will continue to support their investigation and their ongoing work to keep our city safe.
“I would urge anyone with information to come forward, and I want to reassure residents and visitors that everything possible is being done to protect our communities.”
