SOUTH YORKSHIRE'S MAYOR RESPONDS TO KING'S SPEECH

Responding to the King's Speech, South Yorkshire's Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: "

In their first few weeks, the Prime Minister and new Government have begun to make real their commitment to deliver power, control and hope back to communities.

“Today’s King’s Speech is the clearest signal yet that Ministers are committed to working with Mayors, local leaders, and communities to deliver bigger and better local economies that allow our people to stay near and go far.

“More local powers over housing, planning, skills, and transport will allow us to turbocharge work that’s already underway here in South Yorkshire. Our work to create an integrated transport network that connects everyone to opportunity and our employment support programmes that are supporting people to get back into work, are both key areas that we can now work together with Ministers on to accelerate.

“I also warmly welcome plans to halve violence against women and girls and tackle anti-social behaviour that blights our communities.

“I know that this Government understands that the test of its success will be whether places like South Yorkshire grow and thrive. I look forward to working with them to improve lives across all our communities.”
