South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has responded to the Government's announcement on police funding settlements.
The Mayor said:
“I am determined to improve policing in South Yorkshire, to provide a firm foundation for our plans to make our communities healthier, happier and safer.
“To that end, the police funding settlement for South Yorkshire is welcome news; we’re set to get more money than we had anticipated.
“The exact funding settlement will be confirmed in January, but as well as the uplift in funding for our region, we have now agreed to establish a joint working group with the Home Office, to help develop proposals for a sustainable solution to the deficit we inherited. Through that working group we will develop a proposal for the Government’s spring Spending Review.
“The indications from the Government are positive, they recognise the challenges we face, which have not been helped by the long-term decline in police funding which this new police settlement begins to reverse. I look forward to continuing to work with them on their mission – and our shared ambition – to improve policing in our communities.”
