Domestic Abuse
Under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, domestic abuse is behaviour by one person towards another where both people are aged 16 or over, are personally connected ( including current or former intimate partners, family members, spouses, civil partners, or people who share parental responsibility for a child), and the behaviour is abusive. Abuse may consist of a single incident or a pattern of behaviour, and can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, or background.
Reporting domestic abuse
If you are experiencing domestic abuse, you can report it to the police by calling 101 for non-emergency situations or 999 if you or someone else is in immediate danger. You may also wish to speak to a trusted family member, friend, neighbour, support worker, or healthcare professional.
Call 101
For non-emergency situations. If you have a hearing or speech impairment, use the textphone service on 18001 101.
Report online
Use the South Yorkshire Police online portal.
Please do not use the online form in an emergency. If you require an immediate police response, call 999.
South Yorkshire Police take all reports of domestic abuse seriously, and will assess the level of risk and support required to help keep victims and their families safe.
Emergency support
⚠ If you are in immediate danger, dial 999.
If you can’t speak, listen to the operator and cough, or press the keys on your phone. You will be asked to press 55. This is known as the ‘Silent Solution’, and it will be known that your call is an emergency.
