Interchange Facilities Survey

This includes analysis of the interchange facilities survey conducted in September and October 2022.

Key Findings

• Of the 295 complete and 24 partial responses (for a total of 319 responses), Barnsley had the highest number of respondents (34%), followed by Rotherham (26%), Sheffield (19%), Doncaster (11%) and Meadowhall (10%)
• 46% respondents identified as male, 45% female, 1 % non-binary and 8% elected not to share this information.
• 33% of respondents reported using the specified interchange to travel by bus 5 or more days a week, 27% for 3-4 days a week, 23% for 1-2 days a week, 5% once a fortnight, 8% about once a month, 2% less often than once a month and 2% claimed they never use that interchange to travel by bus
  • Rotherham interchange had the highest number of respondents who reported traveling 5 or more days a week (14%), followed by...

You Said, We Did

Below are some actions SYMCA has taken as a direct response to this survey conducted:

1.  Feeling of Safety and Security
   1. Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) – we have adopted a       multi-agency response to combat this issue at the transport interchanges in   South Yorkshire.
   2. Five additional CCTV cameras at Meadowhall interchange platforms.
   3. Working with local stakeholders to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)   such as South Yorkshire Police and Local authorities.
2.  Availability of information
   1. SYMCA is currently reviewing the availability of information to   customers i.e. bus times.
   2. Enhanced display screens at the interchanges – SYMCA has replaced   some dated displays with new passenger information display screens   (PIDS).
   3. The Mayor of South Yorkshire, Oliver Coppard will launch an initiative   to develop a real-time application for travelling around South Yorkshire.

Have your say on South Yorkshire's buses

We asked you about the journeys you make in South Yorkshire and your priorities for using public money to support bus services, in a public survey held between Monday 1 August to Friday 19 August. Feedback from the survey will help to shape and inform our decision-making on the most effective use of South Yorkshire bus budget, to pay for services where communities rely on them the most.

Enhanced Partnership Consultation

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) recently approved plans to improve local bus services through a formal Enhanced Bus Partnership Scheme with bus operators, in response to the government’s National Bus Strategy, Bus Back Better.
 
An Enhanced Partnership for South Yorkshire will allow local leaders to work together with operators to improve ticketing, routes, and frequency of services across the region. It will also allow us to bid for a fair share of £3 billion of national funding pledged by government to encourage local bus use.
 
We have bold ambitions:

• a cap on daily and weekly fares and free travel for under 18s
• a faster, more reliable and punctual system
• a better bus experience
• a new zero emission bus fleet

We want to ensure the public’s views continue to inform our journey to transform bus services in South Yorkshire. We asked for feedback on our Enhanced Partnership Plan and Scheme in a public consultation which ran from Friday 7 January until Sunday 20 February 2022.
