The ZEBRA projects aim was to electrify key bus services within South Yorkshire, enhancing public transport whilst contributing to environmental sustainability. This initiative was part of the Department for Transport's (DfT) scheme, providing up to £120 million to support the introduction of zero-emission buses and related infrastructure across regional areas outside London. 

23 electric buses were introduced on Stagecoach's 221 and 22x services, linking Rotherham to Doncaster and Barnsley. It also introduced 4 new single decker electric buses on a city connect service in Sheffield, as well as depot infrastructure in Rawmarsh, pantograph infrastructure in Rotherham Interchange, and plug in chargers at Sheffield Interchange.  

All buses are now in service.
