Scheme description
This ambitious scheme will help to support the long-term viability of Tram Train beyond its successful pilot, as well as reducing congestion and poor air quality within the Lower Don Valley and A6178 corridor.
The scheme will make use of existing underutilised parking spaces at Magna Science & Adventure, which is adjacent to the track. It will help to address major congestion in the Templeborough area between Rotherham and Sheffield particularly at Junction 34 of the M1. Much of this corridor is located within Air Quality Management Areas, including the city-wide AQMA in Sheffield.
It will improve connectivity and provide additional transport options for accessing Magna and the wider Templeborough/Sheffield Road area from both Sheffield and Rotherham, as well as supporting Rotherham Council’s aspirations for increased investment in the regeneration of Templeborough.
Although the new stop is being designed on heavy rail infrastructure, the stop will provide passengers facilities similar to that of a Tram Train/Supertram stop.
It will be fully accessible, consisting of two new platforms connected by an overbridge, lifts and steps. The P&R will be constructed within the existing Magna car park, and will be free to park at in line with other SYMCA-operated park & ride sites.

Current work
SYMCA has approved the appointment of Network Rail for the delivery phase.
Network Rail has appointed AmcoGiffin to undertake the construction of the new Tram Train station. Works started in March 2025 with an expected completion in winter 2025.
From Saturday 29 March until winter 2025, there will be some track possessions in place over the weekends to allow the construction works to take place, which means that there will be some temporary changes to some Tram Train services on Saturday evenings. During this time Rotherham Central and Parkgate tram stops will not be served, and a replacement bus service will operate between Meadowhall South, Rotherham Central and Parkgate every Saturday evening from approximately 5pm until end of service.
Information relating to the impact of the works on Tram Train services, including Tram Train and replacement bus timetables, is available via the Magna dedicated webpage here.
