BARNSLEY TOWN CENTRE PUBLIC REALM
Published 20 August 2021 at 3:32pm
A grant of £1,755,000 from SYMCA’s Getting Building Fund will enable works to Peel Square which sits at the north west edge of the town centre. The proposed development seeks to enhance the historic town centre and feeds into the renewal and diversification of commercial and economic activity in this area. The overall vision for a ‘Better Barnsley’ is long-held – and is outlined in the aims of the Town Centre Prospectus (2014).
The project will deliver a complete refurbishment of the square and include the removal of existing market stalls, the removal of below ground public toilets and mass fill void, re-surfacing, lighting, signage and drainage works. The investment will create a high quality public realm. The proposed enhancements are the result of extensive consultation with local stakeholders and will create distinctive and accessible spaces and streets, which will also have benefits for the wider built environment.
SYMCA GBF allocation: £1,755,000
Total project scheme: £2,282,555
