A major South Yorkshire transport infrastructure project which has boosted public transport options, improved journey times and offers a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians, has won a regional award.
The Doncaster i-port Bridge Scheme was the winner in the Large Transport Projects category at the Yorkshire and Humber Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Awards held in Leeds this week.
There was also good news for the Rotherham Parkgate Park and Ride and Link Road project which was Highly Commended in the same category.
Executive Director of Transport at SYMCA, Melanie Corcoran, said: “We’re creating a fully integrated world-class public transport system across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, and I'm really proud of our teams working with our partners on these projects and all of our South Yorkshire transport infrastructure schemes.
“Receiving recognition through the awards is a reflection of the high quality of our infrastructure projects and the real difference they are already making in our communities by improving transport options, ensuring everyone has more freedom and choice in how they travel across South Yorkshire.”
The £7.37m iPort Bridge scheme created a new highway bus gate link between West End Lane and iPort Avenue in Rossington, Doncaster. The link includes a new bridge over the River Torne which connects a new housing regeneration area to the iPort – the UK’s most advanced logistics hub.
Now public transport is a realistic option for iPort employees and recent surveys have shown there are a monthly average of 1,800 cyclists and 4,500 pedestrians using the walking and wheeling route that now runs alongside the new bus link.
SYMCA worked in partnership with the City of Doncaster Council to deliver the scheme, along with contractor Eurovia (Taylor Woodrow), scheme designer Arup Key and stakeholders including Verdion, Harworth and First Group.
The 289-space free-to-use Park and Ride for Rotherham Parkgate Tram Train has been opened next to Parkgate Shopping Park, and includes 14 EV chargers, cycle racks, disabled access spaces, and parking for solo motorcycles, as part of a scheme to help improve walking, cycling and transport connections across South Yorkshire.
The new link road which was also part of the project makes it easier for people to reach the Parkgate Shopping park and has reduced traffic congestion on the A633 and A6123 through Parkgate.
The £12.7m project has been led by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), working with Rotherham Council, Parkgate development site owners Stadium and contractor Tilbury Douglas.
The projects are two of a number being funded by SYMCA through the UK Government’s £166 million Transforming Cities Fund settlement for South Yorkshire.
The Yorkshire and the Humber CIHT Awards celebrate the very best the region offers across the key areas of highways and transportation. The Awards recognise the outstanding contribution that good projects and people make to the daily lives of people in Yorkshire and the Humber.
