SOUTH YORKSHIRE TO RECEIVE AN EXTRA £9M TO HELP TACKLE ROUGH SLEEPING AND HOMELESSNESS

South Yorkshire is set to receive an extra £9 million over the next three years to help people move away from rough sleeping and homelessness and into safe, secure accommodation. 

The funding, which has been confirmed today, forms part of a new £442 million national package announced by the Government, supporting areas across England to provide emergency accommodation, longer-term homes and practical help with housing, health and other needs. 

The investment follows an earlier £9 million allocation to the region from Government in April, taking the total to £18 million for work on homelessness and supported housing across South Yorkshire.
 
It will boost the work already underway through South Yorkshire's Homelessness Task Force, bringing together councils, charities, public services, community organisations and people with lived experience to strengthen the region's response. The programme will support the delivery of more settled homes over the next three years, accompanied by intensive wraparound support. 

The Task Force's work is also being shaped by local services and people with direct experience of homelessness. 

This week, South Yorkshire's Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, and Chair of the South Yorkshire Homelessness Task Force, Kilvinder Vigurs, met with the Changing Futures Co-production and Peer Support service, commissioned by Sheffield City Council and delivered by South Yorkshire Housing Association.

Following the visit the Deputy Mayor said: “Ending rough sleeping isn't just about providing a bed for the night. It's about helping people feel safe, secure and supported, and making sure nobody is left to face life's challenges alone. That helps build safer, stronger communities for everyone. 

“What we heard from people with lived experience was clear. A home matters, but so do friendship, purpose and the right support around you. Too many people are still passed between services or blocked from moving forward by their past. Peer support can make a huge difference because it brings trust, understanding and hope.
 
“I welcome the Prime Minister's commitment to ensure every rough sleeper is offered a route off the streets this winter. Here in South Yorkshire, we'll use the further £9 million to build on the work of our Homelessness Task Force, strengthen support and help more people find not just a safe place to live, but a real chance to rebuild their lives.” 

The new measures announced by the Government combine immediate action to help people off the streets this winter with longer-term accommodation and support intended to address homelessness and help people build a more stable future.
