South Yorkshire has delivered a coordinated response to the national Safer Streets Summer initiative, with a focus on tackling anti-social behaviour, retail crime and improving public confidence across our communities. The Home Office led programme focuses on making town centres safer through visible policing, crime prevention and enforcement. It also brings together councils, schools, health services, businesses, transport providers and community groups to deliver joined-up support.
South Yorkshire has delivered a wide-ranging programme of community engagement, offering support and reassurance to local businesses, high-visibility joint patrols between South Yorkshire Police and British Transport Police and targeted interventions in priority areas of the county.
The county saw an additional 3,565 hours of high-visibility patrols in July and 3,890 in August, highlighting South Yorkshire Police’s commitment to supporting targeted interventions.
Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, said: “South Yorkshire is proud to stand alongside our colleagues across England and Wales in delivering the Safer Streets Summer Initiative. This programme has enabled us to intensify our efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour and retail crime in our town and city centres.
“We continue to work closely with our partners in local authorities, South Yorkshire Police and community organisations to support efforts that make our streets safer and help people feel more secure in their communities.
”From joint patrols and youth outreach to environmental improvements and targeted enforcement, this initiative reflects our commitment to responsive, visible policing.
“There has also been a collaborative effort between our partner organisations to engage young people, by providing access to youth clubs and sports activities throughout the summer months when children and young people are away from educational settings.
“As Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, I am particularly proud of the collective spirit that has defined our approach. Together, we are restoring confidence in our public spaces and ensuring that South Yorkshire remains a place where communities thrive.”
