DEPUTY MAYOR FOR POLICING AND CRIME MARKS HATE CRIME AWARENESS WEEK

As Hate Crime Awareness Week gets underway, Kilvinder Vigurs, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in South Yorkshire, has issued a call for communities across the region to unite against hate and intolerance.

“This week is a powerful reminder that hate crime has no place in our society,” said Kilvinder Vigurs.

“Whether it is based on age, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or gender identity, hate crime causes significant distress and harm, not just to individuals, but to the cohesion and safety of our communities.”

South Yorkshire has made significant progress in tackling hate crime through strengthened partnerships between the police, local authorities and community organisations.

Recent initiatives have focused on improving access to education, training and employment for vulnerable groups, including young people affected by adverse childhood experiences and those excluded from mainstream education.

“Our approach is rooted in prevention, safeguarding and community engagement,” Kilvinder added.

“We are working closely with partners to address the root causes of hate and build resilience across South Yorkshire.

“I was proud to stand alongside the Mayor and speakers from across the county last week at the We Are South Yorkshire event, celebrating what unites us, reflecting on our shared values and focusing on the many things we have in common.”

Kilvinder added: “As we mark Hate Crime Awareness Week, I urge everyone to take a stand: report hate crime, support those affected and help us build a South Yorkshire where everyone feels safe and valued.”
