South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has appointed Remedi as the successful provider of Restorative Justice South Yorkshire, following a competitive bidding process for funding.A new contract worth more than £1.5 million, co funded with the Probation Service (Yorkshire and the Humber), has commenced to deliver restorative justice services across South Yorkshire. The contract began on 1 April and will be delivered by Remedi, strengthening support for victims and communities across the region.
Restorative justice offers victims of crime the opportunity, where appropriate, to take part in a process that prioritises accountability, understanding and repair. It enables victims to have their voices heard, helping them communicate the impact of crime, while supporting safer and stronger communities.
The service aims to improve victim satisfaction, reduce reoffending, and enhance community safety through constructive and supported dialogue that promotes personal healing and positive behavioural change.
As part of the successful bid, a new referral route has been introduced to support South Yorkshire Police by broadening the range of interventions available for out of court resolutions (OOCRs). The service will work directly with offenders, offering tailored interventions that encourage responsibility and recognition of the harm their actions may have caused.
The delivery model includes a central Restorative Justice Hub at Snig Hill Police Station, alongside co located services within probation offices across South Yorkshire. This structure provides streamlined referral routes for partners while maintaining strong professional relationships between restorative justice practitioners and criminal justice agencies.
Restorative justice is recognised both nationally and internationally for its role in reducing harm and reoffending. The service is expected to contribute to long term efficiencies across the criminal justice system by preventing repeat harm and improving outcomes for victims and communities.
Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, said: “Restorative justice plays a critical role within the criminal justice system. It provides victims with a meaningful opportunity to process what has happened to them by giving them a voice and allowing them to explain the impact of crime on their lives and on those around them. It also supports those who have committed offences to better understand the consequences of their actions.
“This renewed contract strengthens restorative justice provision across South Yorkshire, delivers improved value for money and ensures our partners have access to high quality, effective interventions that reduce reoffending and prevent further harm.”
Chris Hickin, Assistant Director at Remedi added: “We have been delivering restorative justice for 30 years and are proud to continue delivering this service in South Yorkshire and to build on our work supporting victims, communities and criminal justice partners.
“This new model allows us to strengthen our partnerships, improve access to restorative justice, and ensure that people harmed by crime are offered meaningful opportunities to be heard, supported and empowered.”
A victim of crime and participant in the Restorative Justice process, who was supported by Remedi said: “Restorative Justice has genuinely had a positive impact on my life. It has helped to reduce anxiety and tension and has significantly improved how safe and comfortable I feel. I found the process to be extremely helpful in addressing the issues constructively and it has made a real difference in alleviating the fear and distress that the situation had previously caused.”
