Breaking down digital barriers: Free workshops for Yorkshire and Humber businesses

BREAKING DOWN DIGITAL BARRIERS: FREE WORKSHOPS FOR YORKSHIRE AND HUMBER BUSINESSES

Published 21 October 2024 at 12:03pm

Made Smarter Yorkshire and Humber are raising awareness and breaking down barriers surrounding cyber security for small to medium manufacturing businesses, in collaboration with The Rybec Group, through a series of workshops.

The first event will be an online webinar, on Wednesday 13 November from 11am to 12pm. The goal is to help participants to understand not only the risks of not having strategic security measures, but also the return on investment and competitive advantage it can bring.

It is estimated that a single data breach costs a UK company £130,000, and 26 percent of micro and small businesses that have been fined under GDPR are now in liquidation. 2.5m business across the UK were affected by cyber-crime in 2023, and the majority of these fit into the small to medium category.

As a comparison less than 0.5m were the victims of a physical crime (i.e. burglary/theft/damage), yet statistically businesses are more likely to invest in measures to protect them from physical threats, as opposed to cyber threats.

Following on from Cyber Security Awareness Month in October, this series will empower businesses to secure their business financially, reputationally, and globally.

The session will be led by the experts from Rybec who come with a wealth of knowledge from a police background in cyber-crime. Through the sessions businesses will gain real-world insights into the dangers surrounding cyber security and how to prevent them from becoming dangers in the workplace.

Chris Eastwood, Director at The Rybec Group, who deliver bespoke cyber security consultancy across the UK said: “Digital data security is more than just an expense—it is a powerful catalyst for growth in manufacturing.

“By protecting your data, operations, and operational technology systems, you not only reduce risks but also enhance efficiency and secure a competitive advantage. Investing in digital data security is a commitment to your business's future prosperity.”

The Made Smarter programme in the Yorkshire and Humber region has been delivered by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority since October 2021 and helps manufacturers to leverage the power of digitalisation to increase productivity and secure a competitive edge.

Following the online webinar will be an in-person workshop on Friday 29 November, allowing participants to receive tailored and personalised approach to learning more about how cyber-crime can negatively impact on business.

Businesses can register now for our free webinar and find out how to take control of their own security.
