If you are interested in standing as a candidate in the 2 May 2024 South Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayoral election, this section of the website provides information on how to do so.

How to Stand for Election

The Notice of Election will be published on 26 March 2024. The nomination period for this election runs from Tuesday 26 March 2024 and nomination papers can be submitted between 10am and 4pm on any working day between this date and the nomination deadline which is 4pm on Friday 5 April 2024.  

The Combined Authority Returning Officer (CARO) is not able to accept nomination papers delivered outside of these times. 

Candidates must submit the following as part of their nomination:

  • A completed Nomination Form 
  • 100 signatures (including 10 from each of the four local authority areas of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield) of people on the electoral register for this election.
  • A signed and witnessed Consent to Nomination Form
  • A deposit of £5,000, which is returned if the candidate receives more than five percent of the total valid votes cast in the election for Mayor
  • If standing on behalf of a political party, a certificate from the registered political party’s nominating officer. 
  • A signed request to use a registered political party’s emblem on the ballot paper if the candidate is standing as a party candidate and wants to use a party emblem.

Candidates can have an election address published in the candidate address booklet, which is sent to all registered voters for this election before polling day. To have their election address included, candidates must make a contribution toward the cost of producing the booklet.  Please note that the costs for the booklet are in addition to the candidate’s deposit.
