Kilvinder Vigurs is the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime for South Yorkshire
Kilvinder Vigurs is South Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, appointed by Mayor Oliver Coppard in May 2025, following the transfer of Police and Crime Commissioner powers to the Mayoral Combined Authority in May 2024.
With over 35 years of experience in the criminal justice system, Kilvinder brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to the role, characterised by her commitment to partnership working. Her career began as a probation officer in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, later progressing to Director of Probation in Thames Valley focused on improving operational delivery and commissioning services. Following national changes to the service, Kilvinder was promoted to senior civil service roles including Regional Probation Director in London and Yorkshire & Humber.
She has led national work on public protection, including child safeguarding, domestic abuse, sexual offending, and national security, and co-chaired the EU De-Radicalisation Network for Prisons and Probation. Kilvinder has been a Veterans champion, working to improve services for those who serviced in the armed forces and their families.
Oversight of Policing and Criminal Justice in South Yorkshire
As Deputy Mayor, Kilvinder works alongside the Mayor to oversee policing and criminal justice services across South Yorkshire, on behalf of the public.
Her responsibilities include:
- Helping to deliver the Police and Crime Plan
- Chairing the Local Criminal Justice Board and Safer Roads Partnership
- Overseeing the Violence Reduction Unit
- Leading the development of the Community Confidence Board to improve trust in policing
- Acting as Equalities Commissioner, ensuring diverse voices shape policy and practice
