Our Commissioning Strategy

Our Commissioning Strategy sets out how we will commission services that support victims and witnesses, reduce offending, prevent violence and help build stronger, safer communities across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Commissioning is about understanding the needs of our communities and investing in services that make a real difference to people's lives. By listening to victims, engaging with local partners and using evidence to inform our decisions, we can ensure that support is available when and where it is needed most.

This strategy demonstrates our commitment to:

Putting victims and witnesses first, ensuring they can access high-quality, trauma-informed support that helps them feel safe, heard and empowered.

Preventing crime and violence before it happens , investing in early intervention and targeted support for those most at risk.

Reducing reoffending , providing services that address the underlying causes of offending behaviour and support individuals to make positive, lasting changes.

Tackling inequalities and vulnerability , recognising that some individuals and communities are disproportionately affected by crime, violence and exploitation.

Working in partnership, bringing together criminal justice agencies, local authorities, health partners, the voluntary and community sector, and communities themselves to deliver joined-up and effective services.

Delivering value and impact , ensuring that public funding achieves measurable outcomes and creates safer communities for all.

At South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), we want South Yorkshire to be a place where people feel safe, supported and able to live free from the impact of crime, violence and exploitation

Through this strategy, SYMCA will use its commissioning role to drive innovation, improve outcomes and strengthen the support available to victims, witnesses and those affected by crime and violence. By investing in prevention, protection and recovery, we aim to create safer neighbourhoods, reduce harm and improve the quality of life for people across South Yorkshire.
