SouthYorksWalks: A Celebration of Walking and Wheeling in South Yorkshire

Get walking, from Friday 13 September to Sunday 15 September

SouthYorksWalks is a weekend dedicated to the pleasure of walking, and we’d like to invite you to celebrate the joy of walking and wheeling with us! We don’t mind where you’re walking - whether you’re going for a short local walk, or a longer one with friends and family – we want to see your pictures or videos to help us celebrate the power of walking . As part of the Mayor’s Year of Active Travel, this three-day celebration is all about moving more, moving differently, and sharing that experience with others. Our Year of Active Travel is all about creating a healthier, happier South Yorkshire, and we want you to be part of it!

What we’d like you to do

We’re encouraging everyone to walk, or wheel, during our SouthYorksWalks weekend, and to share their pictures or videos using the hashtag #SouthYorksWalks. We really want to see, and want others to see, you walking or wheeling during the weekend. Whether it's a quick stroll, a walk to a local event or to see friends or family, or a fun exercise session, just get out and enjoy the fresh air. Even if it’s raining!  If you prefer a more social experience, there will definitely be a local walking group you can find – we’ve listed some resources below to help you identify one, but there are also many other organisations such as local community groups, hospitals or libraries where you’ll be able to find walks in your area. And don’t forget to share your experiences with us by using the hashtag #SouthYorksWalks on social media. We’ll feature the best photos on our website or other promotional materials, with your permission first of course.

Why walk or wheel?

Incorporating walking or wheeling (using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or even manual scooters and balance bikes) into your daily routine - just 30 minutes a day - can significantly boost your health. Regular walking enhances cardiovascular fitness, strengthens bones and builds muscle. Plus, the mental health benefits are undeniable. Studies show that regular walking can reduce the risk of depression by a third and release endorphins that improve energy levels, concentration, and sleep patterns.

Get involved: community and walking groups

We hope SouthYorksWalks sparks more interest in your group. We'd love you to organise a walk to coincide with this weekend of walking and wheeling. Please let us know by emailing syw@southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk. Share your walks on social media using the hashtag #SouthYorksWalks, and we’ll help spread the word!

Promoting wellbeing in the workplace

Businesses can join the fun by organising Wellbeing Walks for employees. If you plan a walk, let us know by emailing syw@southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk, and we’ll feature your participation on our webpage. Don’t forget to share and Wellbeing Walks on social media and tag #SouthYorksWalks.

Let’s all get out, move more, and enjoy the journey to a healthier, happier South Yorkshire!
