Scheme description

Magna Tram Train Station and Park & Ride is now open, providing a new, high-quality stop on the Tram Train network between Sheffield and Rotherham.

Opened on 9 April 2026, the station is the first new stop added to the network since 2018 and represents a major milestone in building the South Yorkshire People’s Network. It offers passengers more choice, improved connectivity and a greener, more reliable way to travel across the region.

The new station acts as a gateway to the Lower Don Valley, improving access to the Magna Science Adventure Centre, Templeborough and Tinsley, as well as key employment areas supporting thousands of jobs across manufacturing, logistics and green industries.

What the scheme delivers

The Magna scheme delivers a modern, fully accessible tram-train station alongside a new Park & Ride facility.

Key features include

  • Two fully accessible platforms
  • Step-free access via lifts
  • A new pedestrian overbridge
  • 100 free Park & Ride spaces
  • Cycle parking
  • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure

The station has been designed to provide a high-quality, accessible passenger experience, supporting wheelchair users, people with reduced mobility, families with pushchairs and those travelling with luggage.

Park & Ride and sustainable travel

The new Park & Ride facility makes use of underutilised space at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, helping to reduce congestion in the Templeborough area and around Junction 34 of the M1.

  • 100 standard parking spaces
  • 7 accessible spaces
  • Free parking for tram users
  • Cycle storage and active travel links

Passengers can park and connect directly to tram-train services serving Rotherham, Meadowhall, Sheffield Arena and Sheffield city centre.

By supporting park and ride, walking, wheeling and cycling, the scheme helps reduce traffic, improve air quality and encourage more sustainable travel choices across the Lower Don Valley.

Improving connectivity and access

Magna station strengthens connections between Sheffield and Rotherham, offering quicker and more convenient journeys for residents, visitors and workers.

Journey time benefits include:

  • Around 12 minutes to Rotherham town centre
  • Around 20 minutes to Sheffield city centre
  • Direct links to Meadowhall, Sheffield Arena and Valley Centertainment

The station also improves access to education, jobs, training and leisure, supporting wider economic growth and regeneration in the Don Valley corridor.

Supporting regeneration and cleaner air

The scheme plays an important role in addressing long-standing congestion and air quality challenges in the Lower Don Valley and along the A6178 corridor, including areas within Air Quality Management Zones. [New Tram Train station to open at Magna on 9 April - South Yorkshire MCA]

By enabling more people to switch from car to public transport, the project:

  • Reduces traffic congestion
  • Supports improved air quality
  • Encourages greener travel choices
  • Strengthens the case for further investment in the corridor

It also supports local and regional ambitions to drive inclusive economic growth and regeneration.

From concept to delivery

The Magna Tram Train Station has progressed from early proposals through consultation and delivery to successful operation:

  • 2021: Public consultation helped shape the scheme
  • 2022: Full Business Case approved
  • 2025: Construction began
  • April 2026: Station opened to passengers

The project has been delivered in partnership with Network Rail and Supertram, with funding from the UK Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Part of a bigger network

Magna station is a key part of the South Yorkshire People’s Network, a long-term vision to create a more integrated, accessible and sustainable public transport system for the region.

It supports SYMCA’s wider ambitions to:

  • Improve connectivity across South Yorkshire
  • Make public transport more attractive and accessible
  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Support economic growth and access to opportunity
