DEPUTY MAYOR LAUNCHES COMMUNITY CONFIDENCE BOARD IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Published 28 May 2026 at 2:15pm

Residents, community groups and organisations across South Yorkshire are being invited to take part in a new public forum aimed at strengthening trust, transparency and accountability in policing, where they will have the opportunity to put questions to police leaders.

The Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, will Chair the first Community Confidence Board (CCB) on Wednesday 17 June 2026, from 5pm to 7pm, at the offices of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, in Sheffield city centre.

The CCB is a key commitment from South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, designed to provide an open, transparent public forum for holding the Chief Constable and South Yorkshire Police to account. The Board will bring together the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, the Chief Constable, partners, and local communities to discuss issues of public concern and review progress against the Police and Crime Plan.

The inaugural meeting will focus on improving trust and confidence in policing, with particular attention on:

  • Stop and search

  • Use of force

  • Hate crime

  • Delivery of the Police Race Action Plan

Future meetings will take place quarterly and will explore other key priorities including serious and organised crime, road safety, community safety, and neighbourhood policing.

The Community Confidence Board will provide a meaningful opportunity for residents and stakeholders to:

  • Ask questions directly to policing leaders

  • Share lived experiences and community perspectives

  • Understand what is working well and where improvements are needed

  • Help shape future policing priorities

The Board will operate in public, be webcast where possible, and is structured to allow dedicated time for public questioning and discussion.

Members of the public and organisations are asked to submit questions in advance, at least one week before the meeting. Questions should be submitted to: policingandreform@southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk

Kilvinder Vigurs, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime said: “The Community Confidence Board is about putting communities at the heart of policing. It’s vital that people across South Yorkshire feel heard, understand the decisions being made, and can directly challenge and question those responsible for keeping them safe.

“I would strongly encourage residents, community representatives and organisations to attend, take part and help shape the future of policing in our region.”

Attendance at the meeting is open to the public and will be via registration of interest. Those wishing to attend- either in person or online - can register here: Community Confidence Board - Expression of Interest – Fill in form
